Becoming a new mother brings on a lot. A lot of emotions, a lot of physical changes and a lot of baby stuff. Before you go purchasing all the hand-me-down, ‘lightly’ used baby gear to save a few bucks… you might want to read a little further.

MotherGuide.Net provided these tips when shopping for used baby items:

  1. Visual check: inspect the item for any visible damages, broken or missing parts. Check to see if the item is disassembled, have whoever is selling the item assemble it for you to make sure nothing is missing. Check for a manufacturer’s tag, this probably has a model number if needed in the future.
  2. Check for recalls: The U.S. Consumer Safety Commission (CPSC) has a great place to check items to make sure they haven’t been recalled. Use the model number on the item. Whoever is selling this product may not even be aware that the item is under recall, especially if the item is old.
  3. Things to consider:
    • Car seats: ask owner if the car seat has been in a car accident. If so do not purchase that item.
    • Crib: Take the model number of a used crib to the CPSC website to make sure it is not under recall. The CPSC even has a lengthy PDF that goes into detail about what to look for when purchasing or using a previously owned crib.

Saving money is a no-brainer if possible, but not when your child’s safety is at risk.
