No one has actually done the research needed to determine how many people actually have lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance makes it difficult for people to digest milk, cheese, and yogurt, and many Americans think they have lactose intolerance and in turn cut out dairy products from their diets. According to experts, “no one really knows whether they are damaging their health” by avoiding these products, reports Maggie Fox from Reuters.

“There is a huge amount of research that needs to be done,” said Dr. Frederick Suchy of the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Researchers say people who think they are lactose intolerant and avoid all dairy products might not need to cut them completely out of their lives. Suchy went on to say, “There is a great deal of worry that people who avoid dairy are missing out on calcium and vitamin D that can keep their bones strong, minimize high blood pressure and perhaps even prevent some cancer,” however, much research is needed to find out if this is true.

If you are lactose intolerant, find a doctor near you to answer any questions you might have about your own diet.
