You may be aware of postpartum depression, but many women are experiencing depression during pregnancy as well. Recently studies have shown a positive solution.
According to Health.com, a study was done that treated pregnant women with depression using a pregnant-specific acupuncture and the women had a 63 percent versus a 44 percent response rate in those treated with control acupuncture or massage.
Twenty percent of women are known to have issues with depression while pregnant; their symptoms include hopelessness, sadness emotions that are constant for more than two weeks. Some women feel severe anxiety or a disconnection from their baby in the womb. Even these moms-to-be are experiencing these depressed feelings many are apprehensive to try any medications while pregnant. Depression-specific acupuncture could be a great new tool to use for these hopeless mothers because it is designed to attack those areas that are affected by depression.
“We tested acupuncture as a standalone treatment, and the results are very positive,” said study author Rachel Manber, a professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine Sleep Medicine Center in Redwood City, Calif.
