Today women are obsessed with their size. In the last 10 years England had an 80% increase in young ladies who were hospitalized for anorexia. Young girls’ idea of the perfect body image is the famous women who strut the front of magazine covers. An estimation of 1.1 million people residing in the United Kingdom suffer from an eating disorder of some kind. These women range from 12-24 years old who do anything from over-exercise, take laxatives, bulimia, calorie-count and obsessively diet.

According to BBC News.Com, Marilyn Monroe, who was a huge sex symbol, was a size 12… which was normal in the 50s. The ideal shape for girls these days are from a size 8 down to a 00. Unfortunately even for those women who are comfortable in their skin are starting to feel the pressure all around them to slim down. This obsession has become such an issue that women are going to extraordinary measures to reshape their body the way it wasn’t meant to grow by eating far fewer calories than healthy, exercising to the extreme or even undergoing plastic surgery.

Mothers are the biggest role for young girls. A mom’s attitude and behavior about their own body will be recognized by their daughters, which may determine their daughter’s amount of self-security. The media definitely isn’t helping this situation, they are actually making it worse- fashion designers asking for size 0 models only, etc.

“Acquiring healthy self-esteem which is not based predominantly on body shape and weight is critical for lasting emotional and physical health,” says Dr. Yellowlees, a consultant psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders.
