What kid doesn’t like candy? Not many. Research has recently found that children who have an ‘extra’ sweet tooth may be at risk for depression or alcohol problems as an adult. Reports have pointed to particular kids who are interested in sugary treats more than normal – they might become an addict one day. Apparently, these same kids usually have a family member who has an alcohol problem or depression issues. What isn’t clear is whether or not the attraction to sweetness is because of a chemical difference or their upbringing. Researchers report that sweet taste-buds and alcohol ignite several of the same reward circuits in the brain.

BBC News.Com reports: experts say alcoholics tend to have a sweet tooth. The connection between sweets and children is not as clear. U.S. researchers have highlighted that a preference for sweet beverages were found in the kids who were undergoing growth spurts. Past studies have suggested sweet treats may help act as analgesics as well as mood enhancers.

“In addition, certain groups of children may be especially attracted to the intense sweetness due to their underlying biology,” said Julie Mennella, lead researcher.

Does your child seem to love sweets more than normal? Schedule a visit to a psychiatrist to evaluate their behavior.
