While pregnant, it is a no-brainer that being healthy is not only extremely important for your health, but also your baby’s. The baby is feeding off the nutrients you put into your body while they are in the womb. Once they are born, don’t be in such a hurry to lose the baby weight… a healthy, smart diet is imperative for breast feeding.
WebMD.com has provided 12 healthy foods that new moms should add to their grocery list:
- Salmon- loaded with DHA- a crucial development of your baby’s nervous system
- Dairy products- helps develop your baby’s bones
- Lean beef- boosts your energy with iron and vitamin B-12
- Legumes- rich in iron and protein and easy on the wallet
- Brown rice- losing weight to quickly may cause you to produce less milk for the baby- eat healthy whole grains
- Oranges- boosts energy- nursing moms need a lot of vitamin C
- Whole wheat bread- folic acid is needed in your breast milk and is full of fiber and iron
- Leafy greens- enriched with vitamin A- your baby needs this from your breast milk
- Whole grain cereal- boosts energy and has fortified and essential vitamins and nutrients.
- Water- dehydration is one of the biggest energy drains out there. Breast feeding moms are at risk more than anyone. Drink at least eight cups of liquid per day and it’s best to avoid caffeinated drinks
- Blueberries- be sure to get two or more servings of blueberries a day. They are full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and a healthy dose of carbs to keep your energy levels high
- Eggs- egg yolk is one of the few natural sources of vitamin D- an essential nutrient to help your baby’s bones grow.
