Many questions have risen about gluten and how it affects our bodies. It has been discovered that if anyone develops celiac disease, a digestive disorder which is easily misdiagnosed (or overlooked) due to its varied symptoms, they could become infertile. Additionally, when someone with this disease consumes gluten, they end up damaging their small intestine.

According to NYTimes.com, Dr. Sheila Crowe answered some questions pertaining to this new discovery. She answers that most women who are found with celiac disease that go untreated will become infertile, have miscarriages, preterm babies or have obstetrical problems. Women also tend to lose their periods at an earlier age, while men’s sperm count lowers significantly with celiac disease.

This can be easily avoided and treated with a gluten-free diet, proper nutrition and exercise. Coincidentally, those three (diet, nutrition and exercise) will also help if you’re hoping to get pregnant by preparing yourself to be in the perfect condition.

Are you having some of these symptoms? Get screened for celiac disease by antibody testing.
