President Obama revealed on Sunday that he plans to assemble a public meeting at the end of the month with Republican and Democratic leaders to reach a bipartisan consensus on healthcare reform. Obama wants to hear Republican’s input in regards to healthcare reform, however, he does not want to completely start over, only take the best ideas and move forward. Newt Gingrich and John C. Goodman from The Washington Post say, “The best ideas out there are not those that were passed by the House and Senate last year, which consist of more spending, more regulations and more bureaucracy.” Gingrich and Goodman have listed 10 ideas that they say would build a system that delivers more quality choices at a lower cost for every American:
- Make insurance affordable
- Make health insurance portable
- Meet the needs of the chronically ill
- Allow doctors and patients to control costs
- Don’t cut Medicare
- Protect early retirees
- Inform consumers
- Eliminate junk lawsuits
- Stop healthcare fraud
- Make medical breakthroughs accessible to patients
Gingrich and Goodman say, “The solutions presented here can be the foundation for a patient-centered system. Let’s hope the president has the courage to embrace them.”
What do you think about these ideas?
