Parents have always worried about one thing or another when it comes to their children… first it was lead, then baby bottles, then Christmas toys… now it is cadmium, an element found in cheap jewelry.
The Detroit Free Press reported that last week the nation’s product safety chief warned parent’s that their children’s safety was at risk because of this dangerous component. This warning arrived after reports came back that tests proved high levels of cadmium in children’s play jewelry were imported from China. According to recent research, cadmium, like lead, can alter or ruin brain development in children and may even cause cancer. Continued research has shown that cadmium links to breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, obstructive pulmonary disease, loss of kidney function and loss of bone density.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has made it clear that their main concern is young kids chewing, sucking or swallowing these pieces of jewelry. Nobody is really sure whether or not these trinkets can harm through skin exposure.
“It’s easier just to spend a little bit more money on sterling silver,” said Taggart, a mother of two, including a 4-year-old girl. “Or make macaroni necklaces.”
