According to the Food and Drug Administration Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream should not be used by new moms. FDA warns customers that this cream encompasses ingredients that may harm nursing babies.

FDA alerted WebMD.com that mothers and caregivers need to seek immediate medical attention if these strange symptoms: loss of appetite, trouble in waking the baby, limp arms or legs, weak grip strength or discoloration of skin occur.

Two ingredients that seem to be causing a lot of problems with respitory issues: chlorphensein and phenoxyethanol. Chlorphenesin relaxes skeletal muscle and can slow the central nervous system and cause respiratory depression in infants. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that’s mainly used in make up and medications- it can lower the central nervous system, cause vomiting, diarrhea and lead to dehydration.

“FDA is particularly concerned that nursing infants are being unwittingly exposed by their mothers to this product with dangerous side effects,” says Janet Woodcock, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in a news release.

The FDA advises breast feeding mothers with cracked, painful nipples to speak with their doctor.
