Many people use water purification systems at home, but do they know why they use them? Is it just because their family members or neighbors do? Is filtering our water necessary? According to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) 90% of the water supply in the US is safe to drink from tap. But that 10% could have:
- Extreme levels of lead
- Increased level of contaminant in water (i.e. radon)
- Effects on those with an extremely compromised immune system (i.e. those with HIV or on chemotherapy)
Water purifiers will help get rid of contaminants that could make you sick, such as:
- Bacteria
- Lead
- Radon
- Radium
- Nitrates
- Arsenic
- Pesticides
- Byproducts of the disinfection process
- Water filter options:
When looking for a water purifier first you need to make sure it is certified by the EPA. Everydayhealth.com lists a few:
- Water softener
- Aerator
- Absorptive media or water filtration
- Distillers
- Reverse osmosis units
- Filtered water pitchers
If you aren’t able to buy a water filter system or want a quick fix, there are alternatives:
- Run cold tap water for awhile- will help flush out the lead
- Boil tap water for three minutes then pour into a washed pitcher, refrigerate- will help kill microbes
- Place tap water in a pitcher and refrigeration will help improve taste of overly chlorinated water
Concerned that you’ve already been drinking contaminated water? Connect with a doctor and find out… Also, be careful drinking out of soda fountains, E.Coli has been found in certain stores.
