Millions of Americans are uninsured; however the state of California has the largest number of people without insurance, and this number continues to grow. 6.6 million Californians are uninsured, and California has “a lower percentage of individuals with employer-sponsored coverage,” reports Paul Fronstin from the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Employer-sponsored coverage decreased 9% between 1987 and 2008, and “although Medicaid and individually purchased coverage partially offset this decline, more than 20% of Californians remain uninsured,” states Fronstin.
Fronstin found that nearly one third of uninsured Californians have family incomes of more than $50,000 per year, and employees in businesses of all sizes are increasingly likely to be uninsured. 60% of uninsured children are in families where the head of the household has a year-round, full-time job, and 69% of those uninsured children are eligible for the Medi-Cal or Healthy Families programs. Also, almost 60% of California’s uninsured are Latino. Fronstin goes on to say that “Given the current economic conditions in California and the rising unemployment rate, it is likely that the ranks of the uninsured will continue to grow in the coming year.”

It is tragic that we as a great nation can’t figure out a solution to the uninsured
situation. Other countries have already done it and it seems the same”pride”
that got us to the top will ironically bring us to our knees if we don’t embrace change.
Until then, we have to take advantage of existing programs. There are at least two of
them which I feel everyone needs to know about. One is the “Patient Assistance
Program” and two are free discount prescription cards that exist. I know of a site
(www.medpap.ws)which goes over both .I hope this helps until we as a people truly realize
we are only as strong as our weakest link.
