After the devastating 7.0 earthquake last Tuesday in Haiti, International Red Cross estimates that 45,000- 50,000 people were killed but that number could sky rocket in the coming days. The potential for the living and sick to consume contaminated drinking water is a huge concern.

In order to protect the living in Port-au-Prince mass graves will have to be made immediately. So far 7,000 people have been buried in a mass grave from this devastating earthquake.

“Bodies decaying in the hot sun will not only create an odor that is offensive to humans, but it will also attract small animals and insects that can spread disease, and that’s where the long-term public health issues come into play,” Dr. Michael Baden, chief forensic pathologist for the New York State Police, told FoxNews.com.

Around the world people are wondering how they can help.  A big way is volunteering to bury the dead bodies- fast before their decomposition threatens the living. There is also a worry about identifying the people- there is no way they can figure out who every dead person is in the matter of time given.
