Because many parents are worried about the safety of vaccines given to their children, many parents are refusing to get their kids vaccinated at all. A vaccine was created 15 years ago to prevent chickenpox, but because parents are refusing to get their kids vaccinated, researchers “found that children [who were not vaccinated] were nine times as likely to get chickenpox,” reports WebMD.

Some parents see their refusal as no big deal because chickenpox is looked at as a minor illness. However, “before the vaccine there were 100 deaths and 10,000 hospitalizations a year due to varicella [chickenpox],” states Jason M. Glanz, PhD.

Think your child has the chickenpox? Find a pediatrician near you who can help.

And let’s not forget secondary illness. Ah! Giving your children the gift that keeps on giving…in this case Shingles later in life. Sigh.
