According to KidsHealth.Org, kids break their bones a lot; which leads you to the question, are they getting enough calcium? Osteoporosis is a scary disease that affects many people, but can be easily avoided by changing the diet. Adding calcium enriched foods, vitamin D and exercise can keep those bones strong and healthy.

Everydayhealth.com recommends these dairy enriched products:

  • Yogurt
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Cottage Cheese

Other calcium and Vitamin D enriched foods are:

  • Beans
  • Almonds
  • Canned sardines with bones
  • Canned salmon with bones
  • Fortified cereal, juice or soy milk

“Bone cannot build the matrix of tissues it needs for optimum strength without optimum nutrition. Bones are made up of more than just calcium. You need adequate protein, vitamin D, vitamin K, and the right amount of phosphorous, too,” says Lona Sandon, RD, assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.

Eight ounces of milk provides 300 mg of calcium. National surveys show that women and girls get half the amount of calcium that’s recommended. Although snacking on cheese sounds delicious too much calcium can cause a problem when your body needs to absorb other important minerals.

Stick to the saying, “everything is okay in moderation.”

Find out your bone’s health, get them tested. Find a doctor near your home.
