WebMD reports, “Two out of three pregnant women in the U.S. take some kind of medicine during pregnancy. Yet very few drugs are tested in pregnant women.” The affect of common medications on pregnant women is unclear, so the FDA and a crew of HMOs have set in motion several studies to find out how different medicines affect pregnancy.

“The study will analyze health care data on about 1 million U.S. births from 2001 to 2007. The idea is to gather information on all medications prescribed for pregnant women and to look for health effects and birth outcomes,” states WebMD. When all of the studies are complete, the results will reveal important information to doctors and patients about what medicines are appropriate for pregnant women to take.
