The “Fresco Menu” offered at Taco Bell is just one of the many healthy options available at fast food restaurants. Taco Bell has released “a new infomercial starring a woman named Christine Dougherty, who says she lost 54 pounds on what the company calls the Drive-Thru Diet – a nickname for the seven items, including tacos and burritos, that the chain is offering, each with less than 9 grams of fat,” states the Los Angeles Times.
The Los Angeles Times also reports that, “Christine’s story is a little skimpy on the details.” She says she lost the weight by lowering how many calories she consumed by eating food from the Fresco menu and making “other sensible choices,” and says she reduced her daily calorie intake by a total of 500 calories. However, the Fresco menu is really not much different than the regular menu in regards to calories. There is only an estimated 50 calorie difference between items from the two menus, which doesn’t account for her 500 calorie reduction a day.
Even though the infomercial seems to be advertising Taco Bell’s products as a weight-loss solution, “Taco Bell makes no claims as to its tacos’ special weight-loss capabilities,” states the Los Angeles Times.

The way Taco Bell has framed this story and commercial is pretty dishonest. The calorie reduction is their new menu is definitely not enough to produce the weight loss that is shown.
