Finding it hard to stay trim this holiday season? These helpful hints may help you decipher between a sugary treat and a healthier alternative that is just as flavorful.

Health.com provided these eight ways to be healthier this holiday season:

  1. Rather than grabbing a handful of cheesy sticks snack on pretzels
  2. Instead of Swedish meatballs eat shrimp cocktail
  3. Eggnog is always a holiday tradition but stick to spiced cider to avoid those extra calories
  4. Other than eating a loaded baked potato- pile your tater high with turkey bacon, onions and spinach
  5. Crave that creamed spinach? Make a lighter recipe with low-fat milk and light cream cheese instead of cream
  6. Pot Roast is always a holiday dinner favorite but it has a lot of saturated fat instead choose a lean beef tenderloin
  7. Aunt Susie’s fruit cake is not a healthy treat. Eat a slice of pumpkin pie instead
  8. Pecan pie is practically lethal to any diet. Choose apple pie or sweet potato pie as a delicious alternative.

A study from the New England Journal of Medicine discovered most Americans gain at least one pound between Turkey Day and New Years day. To some it may not be bad but the study also showed that this extra weight never came off.

You may feel like you’re holding yourself back by skipping those yearly treats but once 2010 rolls around (next week!) you’ll be thrilled you didn’t pack on the pounds like your neighbors might have.
