New research shows that many of the same genes that cause people to consume alcohol may cause people to smoke marijuana as well. Despite the fact that marijuana is “the most widely used illegal drug in the U.S…. little is known about the genes that influence its use,” states WebMD.

In a study that was performed on 2,761 sets of twins, researchers found that there wasn’t much in common between the environmental factors that influence alcohol and marijuana use, but there was a heavy connection in the genetic factors that make people use both alcohol and marijuana. WebMD also reports that, “Researchers concluded that over 60% of the variance in alcohol and marijuana use and marijuana dependence could be linked to genes.”

Talk to a doctor near you about what else might cause you to drink or use marijuana.
