Twitter and Facebook seem to serve more purpose than just a way to socialize with friends. It is a great way to reach a lot of people to raise awareness about a number of things.

Laurie Brosius is raising awareness about breast cancer. She began tweeting and Facebooking about raising money for breast cancer research and firmly believes that it is the most efficient way to get the word out.

“With social media, you have the ability to spread a message with like-minded individuals pretty rapidly and virally to a targeted audience that is receptive to this message,” explains Adam Hirsch, the chief operations officer of Mashable.com, a social media blog.

Brosius told health.com that 50 percent of givers were online strangers–these people were targeted because when she posted her Facebook update or tweet, her friends or family would post it on theirs and down the line it would go.

Brosisu’s other comment was that cancer research websites are great for making donations but they only target a specific audience. Whereas Facebook updates and tweets target everyone.
