The number of nearsighted people in the U.S. is growing at a significant rate; however, the reason for the increase is unclear.  A new study shows that from 1999 to 2004 the number of Americans with myopia grew by almost 42%.

WebMD states that, “In nearsightedness (myopia), light that enters the eye is focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it, so that distant objects appear blurred. Nearsightedness can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery.”

The study was unable to figure out why rates are growing, but the results did show that the growth rates varied quite a bit between men and women, and between African-Americans and whites.
