Americans are living longer as the death rate continues to decrease among all regions, races, and ethnic groups. Courtney Hutchison from abc News reports, “According to figures from 2007, the average American can expect to live to the ripe old age of 77.9 — one month shy of his or her seventy-eighth birthday.”

This trend of growth has been going on for quite a while, and researchers are surprised this increase hasn’t leveled off yet. Today the death rate is 43% lower than it was in the 1960s, and researchers say this decrease is due to medical improvements in fighting heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, and stroke.

Another report estimates that by 2050 the “life expectancy may rise to 94 for women and 86 for men.” abc News has listed who is living longer and why they are living longer.
