According to the South Beach Diet, eating dark greens may help maintain good health by reducing your risk of heart disease, some cancers and several other illnesses. Dark greens are rich in vitamin C, E, K and other helpful minerals. Those who consume dark greens on a regular basis may have lower blood pressure, cholesterol, have better eyesight and improve gastrointestinal function.

Incorporate these seven nutritional powerhouse greens in your daily diet:

1) spinach

2) broccoli

3) kale

4) Swiss chard

5) romaine lettuce

6) bok choy

7) brussels sprouts

The US Department of Health and Human Services reports to southbeachdiet.com that Americans should consume three cups of dark-green vegetables per week.

So listen to your mother and eat those greens!
