A new study shows that leptin, a hormone that manages appetite, may protect you from Alzheimer’s disease. This study was performed because there was some information that linked the risk of Alzheimer’s disease to body weight.

The animal studies done on the issue are what revealed to researchers that leptin had a positive effect on the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is involved with the important aspects of memory. After seeing this, researchers started their examination of humans to see if the effect was the same.

Dr. Sudha Seshadri says, “Hopefully, in 10 or 15 years this may be one of many agents that we use to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease…Or it may be one of many markers that we measure in combination to predict risk.”
