During these shorter, colder days…don’t hibernate…get moving! The winter season offers several different enjoyable outdoor exercises.
“Dress properly,” says Ann C. Snyder, PhD, professor in the department of human movement sciences and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI. “Be aware of conditions such as ice, wind chill, and extreme cold, and use reflective clothing and/or lights as it gets dark.”
Not only is it great to be outdoors, but outdoor exercise has a variety of benefits such as curing cabin fever, re-energizing your body and limiting exposure to bacteria and germs that are often times found in indoor gyms.
Before you head outdoors remember to talk to your physician, dress in appropriate clothing, keep your feet, hands and head warm and dry, wear sunscreen, be prepared for any potential weather conditions, consider wind chill and drink lots of water. Do watch out for frostbite and hypothermia. Read further about a guide to winter fitness from everydayhealth.com.
