You’ve decided you need a dental implant and now it is time to pick the doctor. But how do you decide who you’re going to choose? What do you want in your implant surgeon? What type of qualifications does the person have to have? Dr. Jonathan Abenaim answers these questions.

Transcript:

“Ok, good morning everybody… so the question is that you’ve decided you want to get a dental implant, or you need a dental implant – whether it’s for stabilizing a denture, a missing tooth, a front tooth that’s been knocked out or just a root canal thats gone bad.

You’ve decided you need an implant and now is the time to pick the doctor.

How do you decide who you’re going to choose, how you’re going to choose it?

Obviously you need to do research on your doctor. Go from recommendations from other doctors, friends that have gone through the procedure.

But what do you want in your implant surgeon?

Traditionally theres always been implant surgeon and implant restorative doctor. That is sort of what we call the “implant team”. Which is totally great, an even better thing to have is an implant surgeon and implant doctor that is the same person.

That, in turn, allows you to know that the dental implant that is placed is in the perfect position. That the tooth will be in the perfect place, so there’s no questions asked or fingers pointed.

What type of qualifications does the person have to have?

Implant dentistry is not a specialty in dentistry, it’s not a recognized specialty. But it has begun to be a sub-specialty. You want to make sure they have fellowships or diplomat status with either ICOI, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists or the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the AAID… anything like that. It shows that they have more education, after dental school, to specialize in this type of procedure.

Obviously, other than that, you should look for whatever you look for in a doctor: compassionate, understands your concerns. And, really that’s about it. Until then, good luck on your search, good luck on your procedure and have a wonderful new year.

Thank you.”
