The Food and Drug Administration is extremely concerned about children and teens being exposed to UV rays. Exposure to a profound amount of UV radiation can point to sunburn and inflate the risk of melanoma. The FDA concludes that limiting sun exposure and using sunscreen is a must to avoid sunburns for the youth.
“Young people may not think they are vulnerable to skin cancer,” says Ron Kaczmarek, M.D., M.P.H., an FDA epidemiologist. “They have difficulty thinking about their own mortality.”
Everydayhealth.com reports that almost 70,000 people in the US will learn they have melanoma this year, one out of eight will die from it according to NCI. Also, the American Academy of Dermatology reports that melanoma is the second most common cancer in women 20-29 years of age.
With all the growing number of teenage girls becoming tanning bed customers there is a bigger risk for skin cancer. Kids are going to the beach and leaving with more and more sunburns, freckles and moles. All of these lead to skin cancer. Parents need to think twice before letting their kids go to the pool without sunscreen or letting their teenage daughters use a tanning bed.
