Overexposure of radiation can be very dangerous; it can cause cataracts, and increase the risk of some forms of cancer. According to Reuters, the Food and Drug Administration stated that they were examining “206 cases of patients being overexposed to radiation during CT perfusion scans of the brain at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles during an 18-month period.”

CT scans are used to check the heart, and to diagnose strokes by analyzing blood flow to the brain. The machines that caused the high doses of radiation were made by General Electric and Toshiba, but the FDA has not figured out if the overexposure was due to the machines or how they were used.

If you are in need of a CT scan, find a doctor in your area.
