As tattoos expand in the US, so does the concern of potential risks. While the dangers of unsterilized needles has been long known (pun intended), what hasn’t been clear is the possible danger of the ink itself.
The color and pigment of the ink is not something that the FDA regulates even though receiving reports of inflammation both immediately after the work is done and even years later. This has prompted the FDA to study the safety of tattoo ink, similar to how they are investigating caffeine mixed with alcohol.
“Our hope is to get a better understanding of the body’s response to tattoos and their impact on human health, and to identify products at greatest risk,” says Linda Katz, M.D., M.P.H., Director of FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
