Diabetes is the disease in which the body doesn’t properly produce or use insulin, a hormone which is needed to convert starches and sugars into energy. An estimated 17.9 million people in America are diagnosed with diabetes and 5.7 million are living with diabetes without knowing it. It has also been linked with obesity.

“The most frustrating part about prediabetes and diabetes is that they are largely preventable, and in circumstances where diabetes can’t be prevented, the onset can usually be postponed,” says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of the South Beach Diet Heart Health Revolution. ”
