Despite original beliefs that folic acid fortification is completely beneficial and safe, a new study has revealed that it may increase the risk of getting cancer.

The purpose of this study was to examine if folic acid actually raises the risk of cancer. It was performed in Norway due to the fact that none of their foods are supplemented with folic acid.

Lead researcher Dr. Marta Ebbing reports that, “The study shows that treatment with folic acid for approximately three-and-a-half years was associated with a 21 percent increased risk of cancer and an increased risk of death after six-and-a-half years of follow-up in a large population of patients with ischemic heart disease living in Norway, where there is no folic acid fortification of foods.”
